Dr. Anne Schafer selected as SFVAHCS Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism
We are delighted to announce that Anne Schafer, MD will assume the role of Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism at San Francisco VA Health Care System on July 1st. Dr. Schafer is an Associate Professor of Medicine and a current member of the SFVAHCS Endocrine section.
Anne received her undergraduate degree at Harvard University. She then moved west to complete her medical degree at UCSF, where she remained for her internal medicine residency, fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology, and an additional fellowship in women’s health. She joined the UCSF faculty in 2011.
Anne is an outstanding clinical investigator with a strong portfolio of published scholarship. Her research has focused on bone metabolism and osteoporosis; she has a particular interest in the interplay of bone, fat and glucose metabolism and the effects of weight loss and bariatric surgery on calcium metabolism and skeletal health. She has over 60 original articles and chapters through work that has been funded by the NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and its National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. She is also a terrific clinician and educator – among her awards, she received the John Karam Clinician-Educator Award from the UCSF endocrinology division in 2018.
