Training Tracks

Trainees choose either the academic or clinical training track:

Clinical Track
The Clinical Track is designed for fellows interested in pursuing robust clinical endocrinology training towards the goal of a career focused on clinical care and medical education. Our graduates have gone on to be major thought leaders in clinical endocrinology, in the US and abroad.  In addition to robust clinical training in the inpatient setting and outpatient clinics, fellows spend 4-6 months dedicated to scholarly activities at the VA Medical Center, and lead a QI project. Fellows also have the option, during Year 2, to have a clinical focus of interest, which includes specific clinics and attendance at local/national conference.

Academic/Research Track
The Academic/Research Track is designed for fellows interested in research and scholarly activity. Our program graduates go on to leadership positions in  academics and industry, and have included Endocrine Society presidents, Division Chiefs and industry heads. Robust clinical training during the 1st year is followed by 2 years of scholarly activity in the clinical, translation or basic sciences; fellows also have the option of training in clinical informatics and diabetes technology. Recognizing the varied training needs of our fellows, the research experience is planned by the fellow in conjunction with their chosen research mentor, career mentor and program director. It consists of a mentored research experience and formal training. UCSF offers many options for formal training, ranging from 6-week courses in Clinical Research to 2-year pathways (ATCR) which can lead to a Master’s degree. Research mentors can be chosen from a wide array of faculty members in the Division of Endocrinology or other departments at UCSF or other institutions.
