Clinical Training
The first year of fellowship is devoted to clinical training in endocrinology, and is similar for all fellows, regardless of track. It consists of extensive inpatient and outpatient exposure to the full spectrums of endocrine disorders, as well as robust educational experiences. Fellows spend 3 months rotating onto each of the following: ZSFG, VA Medical Center, Parnassus inpatient consult, Parnassus outpatient clinics. The training program includes ½ day per week of structured, protected, didactics. This includes lectures on core endocrine topics, endocrine grand rounds, board review and cytopathology conference.
During the 2nd year of training, fellows in the academic track will have a weekly continuity clinic, inpatient service commitments for a few weeks per year, (and options for elective clinics) while spending the majority of time on scholarly and research activities. Second year fellows in the clinical track, in addition to weekly continuity clinic and 4-8 weeks of inpatient activities, will have a variety of clinics for further in-depth training and 4-6 months of time for scholarly activities.
Fellows in the academic track will, during the 3rd year, have a continuity clinic and optional elective clinics, with a majority of time spent on scholarly activities.
Training Sites: The Endocrinology Training Program at UCSF has three teaching campuses: Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZFGH), San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVA), and UCSF Medical Center. The three unique sites offer an incredible diversity of patients and clinical care, ranging from typical cases to tertiary/quaternary care medicine.
