Kathleen Sarmiento, MDDr. Sarmiento is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco, the Director of Sleep Medicine at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, and the National Lead for VA TeleSleep, an enterprise-wide $28m initiative to build a high-performing sleep telemedicine network. She has been instrumental in building infrastructure for and leading VA Sleep operations. This collaborative work includes assessing demand for Sleep care and available resources across all facilities through periodic national surveys, revising VA coding used to identify sleep services, developing and maintaining a sleep telehealth operations manual, developing a national toolkit to facilitate standardization of biomed and IT processes and medical record documentation, and leading monthly community of practice educational webinars on business aspects of VA sleep programs targeting sleep practitioners and general practice managers. Her research interests are focused primarily on health services research, including strategies to improve access to sleep care in rural areas, reduce wait times, lower cost, and de-implement low-value steps in obtaining care.  Dr. Sarmiento obtained her MD/MPH from Tulane University (2002), and completed her residency and both fellowships in Pulmonary & Critical Care (2008) and Sleep Medicine (2009) at the University of Maryland.
