  • The DTC has once again been awarded Program Recognition from the American Diabetes Association. Recognition is a process through which programs are evaluated against the national standards and formally identifies the DTC as a program that provides high-quality self-management diabetes education services to the diabetes community. The ADA Recognition process was implemented in 1986 – The DTC’s first application was approved December 16, 1991 – at that time we were one of 214 programs in the country and 20 in California who held this prestigious title. Now there are 109 Recognized programs in California alone.
  • Fellow Kelly Wentworth received a John Haddad Young Investigator Award
  • UCSF Medical Center has been named among the nation's premier medical institutions for the 17th consecutive year, ranking as the fifth best hospital in the country and the top-ranked hospital in California, in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017-2018 Best Hospitals survey. UCSF received elite Honor Roll status for exceptional performance in 15 medical specialties. It is the top-ranked hospital on the West Coast on the Honor Roll and the top center in California for cancer, diabetes, neurology and neurosurgery, respiratory and kidney disorders and orthopedics.   • Each year, the Department of Medicine offers grants of up to $100,000 either to initiate the development of new cohorts or to expand the use of existing cohorts into new areas. The goal of funded projects is to develop cohorts that are widely used by both clinical and bench investigators. Awardee: Dr. Edward Hsaio: to expand the Biospecimens and Skeletal Tissues for Rare and Orphan Disease Genetics (BSTROnG) cohort for discovery of new genes important for skeletal disease pathogenesis.
  • J. Blake Tyrrell, M.D. is the 2017 Karam Award Recipient.
